A Brief History of Hotpoint
The Hotpoint Electric Heating Company was formed in 1911 in the United Kingdom. In 1920 Hotpoint and General Electric of the United States established the Hotpoint Electric Appliance Company Limited (HEAC) to market GE branded goods such as washing machines, refrigeratores, dryers and small appliances etc in the UK.
In 1929 HEAC joined the Associated Electrical Industries (AEI) group, which itself became part of The General Electric Company or GEC group (not to be confused with General Electric).
Hotpoint continued as a subisidiary of GEC and in 1989 was merged into a new division of GEC, General Domestic Appliances (GDA). Also in 1989 GE purchased a 50% share of this new division from GEC. In 1998 GDA was reorganised with the Redring and Xpelair brands split to become GDA Applied Energy. In December 2001, Merloni Elettrodomestici purchased 50% of GDA from Marconi plc (formerly GEC). In 2005 Merloni renamed itself Indesit Company and Hotpoint continues to be a major brand of that company.
Hotpoint are well known for their range of refrigerators and washing machines.
Makes and models such as the Aqualis are currently very popular.
